St.George Island, FL

Island Monday:  St. George Island, Florida

Happy Island Monday!  Today we’re taking a quick trip to St. George Island, a 22 mile long barrier island off the Northwest Florida coast near Tallahassee with quiet beaches and fresh oysters.

Stay:  Serendipity

As soon as I saw the bright red chairs overlooking the pristine gulf beaches, I knew Serendipity , a 3 bedroom beachfront vacation rental, would be my kind of place.  With its six person hot tub, pool table, foosball table, circular staircase, flat screen TVs, tropical decor, outdoor showers, bicycles and walking distance from restaurants and, most importantly, ice cream, it would be hard to beat for a weekend or week’s vacation on St. George Island.

Eat:  Blue Parrot Oceanfront Cafe

While the food at Blue Parrot has been perfectly good for as long as I can remember, it is the oceanfront location and tiki bar that are the main attractions here.  Blue Parrot is the type of place where you simply throw on a t-shirt and cutoffs over your swim suit and grab a burger and a beer to escape the mid afternoon hot Florida sun.

To experience some of nearby Apalachicola’s famous oysters, take the short drove back over the bridge to Boss Oyster, selected as one of America’s Best Seafood Dives 2012 by Coastal Living Magazine.  Another come-as-you-are joint, Boss Oyster is right on the river and a perfect place for some seafood and an ice cold Corona.

To Do:  Kick around Apalachicola

For an escape from relaxation, Apalachicola is an enchanting town through which to wander before or after your oyster smorgasbord.  The John Gorrie Museum, an official Florida State Park, chronicles the life and works of Mr. Gorrie, inventor of the ice machine and air conditioning.  There are also several historic homes in town to tour, as well as the charming Apalachicola Maritime Museum where you can take a 1-3 hour guided educational boat tour on the ‘Starfish Enterprise.’

Back on the island, climb the newly restored Cape St. George Lighthouse and Keepers Museum or hike the boardwalk nature trail at St. George Island State Park.
